about tallycola

I was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I grew up in the dusty oilsands of southern Alberta, went to university for an MA in Politics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and currently reside in Vancouver. I have been here three years, not counting a few months spent volunteering in Tanzania.

In 2009 I completed the Writing for Film and Television course at Vancouver Film School. I am currently working on my screenwriting portfolio, a YA novel, and looking for any internships or freelance work I can get my hands on. If you are interested in hiring me, or having me fetch coffee for you, please email tallycola at gmail dot com or comment anywhere on my blog.

As a viewer, I am interested in/concerned by the representation of women, girls and minorities in popular film and television.

Among other things.

My movie reviews are more an exercise for me as a screenwriter than real journalistic reviews. I mostly talk about things that impressed me (or not) as a writer, and practice writing loglines. I put up the Bechdel test and minority stuff as a service to those of you who use that criteria to decide which movies to see, but my movie pool is quite small. I mostly see the stuff I can see for free/the cheapest and unfortunately miss out on a lot of indie films and festivals as a result. Hopefully this will change.

New commenters will be moderated first time out.

  1. what’s the old film adage? men act, women appear. well it appears things need to change…
